Why do we give?
It’s not uncommon for many people to think, “If I had a little more money,
my life would be so much easier.” Yet, the Bible tells us in Ecclesiastes
5:10, “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is
never satisfied with his income.”
The test for every person is, “Who will you love and trust?” Will you love
and trust God or will you love and trust in money. The Bible uses a couple
of words when describing our financial stewardship. The word tithe, which
means a tenth, and the word offering, which is giving to God above and
beyond the tithe. Technically speaking, tithing is not giving to God, but
returning to God the first part of what He has entrusted us with. That is
why the Bible refers to the tithe as holy. Holy means, set apart for God.
An offering is giving to God above and beyond the tithe.
The truth is, God doesn’t need our money. He already owns it all (Leviticus
27:30). But when we bring back to Him the first part, we worship Him and
trust Him to bless the rest. As Christians, we should be willing to bring
back to the Lord the first part of our income, that which God provides for
us to live off of. This turns our hearts toward God and He then uses it to
accomplish the work of His Kingdom through His chosen instrument, the local
church (Matthew 6:21, Malachi 3:10).
The church’s job is to meet the needs of the people where God places and
sends us. Just as a hospital cannot heal the physically sick without funds,
neither can the local church heal the spiritually sick without resources.
When we tithe, we give to others through the church.
As followers of Jesus Christ, we believe that we are to be stewards of God’s
resources because He is the Owner of all we have (Psalm 24:1). Throughout
the Bible, we are reminded of the importance of giving back the first
portion of what God has so generously provided us.
Giving is the only area in the Bible where God invites us to test Him. Give
your tithe (the first 10% of what God has provided you to live off of) and
see if He does not open the floodgates of heaven to bless you in ways that
you never thought possible (Malachi 3:10).
